Howto install Joomla on your very own Ubuntu server

Accessing the Files on Your Windows Partition

[Ubuntu can read and write files on your Windows partition. Windows partitions are normally formatted as NTFS (the default for Windows Vista, XP and 2000) or, rarely, FAT32. If unsure, you can find out which format your Windows partition uses by right-clicking the partition in Windows Explorer and selecting Properties.]

HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using the ntfs-3g (easy & safe method)

[ Support of NTFS partition for linux has always been a problem. Projects exist since many years but was always experimental, and was claim to be not safe. On the 14th of July 2006, a developer of the linux-ntfs team, Szabolcs Szakacsits, revolution this area by releasing a new driver ntfs-3g which claimed to provide full read/write support for all NTFS partition. After months of successful testing by hundreds of thousands of users in beta status, ntfs-3g is now fully stable]

Enabling NTFS RW access for user in Feisty Fawn

[There’s plenty of info about how to enable the ntfs-3g module [I call it a module, but others might disagree with that characterization, I guess driver is the better term] in Feisty Fawn. What I want to talk about is how to enable a single user to have those ntfs partitions, in a dual-boot scenario, as their own without the problem of anything on them or created on them becoming the property of the root user.]

Boot and run Linux from a USB flash memory stick

[USB Linux installation enables you to install a portable Linux operating system on a flash drive or USB key no larger than your thumb. This portable Linux version can then be run from any computer that can boot from a flash device, allowing you to bring your operating system, desktop, applications, files, e-mail, personal settings, favorites and more with you. It’s like having your own personal operating system you can carry in your pocket. On this site, we provide many simplified portable Linux flash drive installation tutorials.]

How to set up LAMP on Ubuntu Desktop Edition

[So I’m now using my second laptop as a Linux dev server. Ubuntu is what all the cool kids are using so I thought I’d give it a go. Wait a minute, oh crap, I have to make a choice between Ubuntu Desktop Edition and Ubuntu Server Edition. Well I want to use it as a LAMP server but at the same time I want a desktop and all that comes with it. I figured I’d be able to download the Desktop Edition and sort it out later. I am happy to report I was correct, but I learned a little on the way. Here’s how you do it.]

Installing Beryl On An Ubuntu Feisty Fawn Desktop With An ATI Radeon Graphic Card

[This tutorial shows how you can install and configure Beryl on an Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) desktop with an ATI Radeon graphic card. With Beryl, you can make your desktop use beautiful 3D effects. We will use the open-source ATI driver that comes with Ubuntu plus AIGLX to achieve this; the other way to do this would be to use the closed-source ATI driver together with XGL which seems to be a bit unstable.]

NVidia & other propietary 3D graphics setup is very similar.
NOT INTENDED FOR LOW-END SPECKS (like the PS3 until OpenGL driver are released)

The Perfect Desktop - Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn

[With the release of Microsoft's new Windows operating system (Vista), more and more people are looking for alternatives to Windows for various reasons. This tutorial shows people who are willing to switch to Linux how they can set up a Linux desktop (Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn in this article) that fully replaces their Windows desktop, i.e. that has all software that people need to do the things they do on their Windows desktops. The advantages are clear: you get a secure system without DRM restrictions that runs also on older hardware, and the best thing is: all software comes free of charge.

I want to say first that this is not the only way of setting up such a system. There are many ways of achieving this goal but this is the way I take. I do not issue any guarantee that this will work for you!]

Welcome

Welcome to Windows2Linux!

To start with, we'll make use of Canonical's distro's:
Ubuntu: http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.04/
&
Kubuntu (KDE ubuntu): http://releases.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/feisty/

You can make use of either the CD or DVD versions (an USB version is also available), all of which are 'live' distros.
If you have any doubts, try the live 'try-before-you-buy' option (which is a hullvalot more than MS offers you). Pop the live disk into you machine, reboot, set BIOS to boot from disk.
THIS WILL NOT SCRATCH YOUR EXISTING SYSTEM! (unless you install)

Multi-boot systems are available too.

Typical Ubuntu desktop setup has taken me as little as 15 minutes on a spec PC, and is ready to roll, with full office suite, security & tools, with minimal intervention; still need obvious stuff like security, language, etc, etc.
Use Kubuntu for low-end users to wean them off windows; most won't notice the difference.

Are you too having problems with software that is only available on Windows and not on Linux? Are you still Dual Booting to solve this problem? After this HowTo you will never need to dual-boot again for your windows only software, like Adobe CS!]
